WELCOME TO PLAYTREK, THE STAR TREK COLLECTIBLES MAILING LIST Please save this message for future reference. If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to: playtrek-owner@playtrek.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT IS PLAYTREK? Playtrek is an email list for the purpose of discussing, trading, buying and selling any new and old Star Trek collectibles. Collectibles are here defined as toys, models, games, books, videos, DVDs, trading cards and any other Star Trek merchandise. Playtrek is a place for collectors to get timely, accurate information on Star Trek collectibles, without the noise found in newsgroups and unregulated message boards. Playtrek consists of several hundred friendly collectors who share a vast wealth of knowledge as well as a passion for Star Trek collectibles. This list is privately run and is not sponsored in any way by Paramount or any corporation. Please carefully read THE RULES below for examples of what is and is not an appropriate message to the mailing list. Your list administrators are: Dean Andrade - andradedean@aol.com or dasdasa@aol.com - and - Robert Porter (aka Roberto) - sleestak2@earthlink.net If you have a problem with your list mail or have a suggestion about the list, such as some way to improve it, please feel free to contact Dean. The Playtrek website can be found at: http://www.playtrek.com/ DIGEST VERSION Too much mail? You can change your subscription to the digest version which gives you all the list messages rolled into one big message each day. To switch to the digest version, visit your subscription page as described in the instructions above. NEWBIES If you are new to the Internet and/or mailing lists, it is recommended that you just sit back and read the messages for a while before jumping in. Give yourself a week or three to get used to how things work. If you have a burning question for the group, feel free to send it, but otherwise, it's often a good idea to stay quiet for a while. It's like a highway -- if you jump in without any regard to what's going on around you, you're probably going to crash. You need to merge with the traffic for a smooth transition. For useful tips on mailing list etiquette, see: http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- THE RULES NO SPAM, NO CHAIN LETTERS Anyone sending spam or chain letters to the list will be immediately removed. NO FLAMES In other words, play nice. Use some discretion and THINK about the consequences before you send an angry message. A good rule is: if you're worked up about something, go ahead and write your rebuttal -- but wait an hour or two before sending the message. Sometimes people can look back on their angry words and realize they wrote something they really shouldn't have. NO PROFANITY Profanity is here defined as R-rated language. If you're uncertain if a word is acceptable, choose a gentler alternative. NO SCALPING It is perfectly acceptable to sell items on Playtrek, but items that are currently shipping may be sold only at actual retail cost. Older items (not currently shipping to stores) may be sold at above their original cost. The purpose of the no-scalping rule is to avoid flame wars. NO SCALPER-LIKE TRADES To keep trades as fair and flame-free as possible, items that are currently shipping can only be traded on this list in a 1:1 or retail dollar-value to retail dollar-value fashion. NO AUCTIONS It is acceptable to send an auction announcement, but running an auction on Playtrek is forbidden. For example, it's fine to send a message that you're selling your Voyager figures on ebay. However, it is not acceptable to run the auction on the mailing list. Also, currently shipping items cannot be announced as being auctioned. NO REPOSTING OF PRIVATE EMAILS Reposting of Playtrek email to other lists, newsgroups or any other media without the express written consent of the email's author is prohibited. Playtrek is a private email list. Also, do not send private emails or copyrighted material to the mailing list without permission. NO FILE ATTACHMENTS If you have a binary file you wish to share with everyone, just send a message stating where it can be found on the web, or request a private email from those who want it. EDIT YOUR MESSAGES When quoting a message for a reply, edit out the non-pertinent part of the quoted message and only quote what is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for your reply. Quoting of an entire digest is grounds for immediate removal from the mailing list. USE SPOILER WARNINGS Put [SPOILER] in your subject line if you're discussing ANYTHING about a recent episode. Even something seemingly minor, such as the mention of an alien species, may upset people who have not yet had a chance to watch the episode. Many people watch the show days or weeks later. People in countries outside the USA often have to wait weeks or months to see current episodes. Also, remember that discussion of the show itself should be kept to a minimum since this list is for the products, not the shows. Other forums exist to discuss the shows. USE ABBREVIATIONS Use [OT] in your subject line for OFF TOPIC messages. An Off Topic message would be anything not related to Star Trek collectibles. These messages are okay and will come up from time to time, but please try to keep them to a minimum. Other subject line abbreviations are: [WTT] Want To Trade, [WTB] Want To Buy, [WTS] Want To Sell and [CT] Customizing Tip. Much of the above makes it sound like I'm going to be very strict about what you can and cannot send. Well, I'm not. Feel free to write what you like as I want all the discussions to be as open as possible. However . . . should a problem develop, such as someone excessively violating the above rules, that person may receive a warning or may be removed from the list until they can learn to play nice. Just remember, we all collect for different reasons and in different ways. Above all, respect each other, so everyone can have a good time. Playtrek is a friendly group of collectors who like Trek collectibles and other friendly collectors. If you're that type, you'll fit in just fine. Welcome aboard! Have fun!
